Most players opt for a swig of water or Gatorade when they’re in need of hydration in the middle of a game.
But on Monday in Philadelphia, 76ers star LeBron James appeared to go for a drink more suited to his off-court preferences.
After a hit-ahead pass from Tyrese Maxey soared just out of James’s reach and out of bounds in the third quarter, the 41-year-old stumbled into the crowd before bumping into a fan who just so happened to be enjoying a cup of wine.
And before heading back to play defence, cameras caught James taking the cup from the fan and raising it to his lips for a quick sip of vino.
ESPN’s Kris Rhim caught up with the fan, Troy Clemons, during the game to get him to retell his run-in with the four-time MVP.
“Walking to my seat (with) whatever this beverage is,” Clemons said, holding up a new cup of wine. “We won’t say what it is. LeBron crashed into me, he grabbed me and he said, ‘My bad.’ My drink spilled everywhere. He took my drink from me, and he basically just took a sip of it, gave it back and ran back on the (court).
“I’m just glad for him to be here. I’m not worried about the wine getting on me, but I appreciate everything the Sixers are doing and I’m here to have a good time, man.”
Naturally, the video of the moment went viral on social media, where fans suggested that Clemons should never wash and keep the cup.
But the 76ers fan wasn’t concerned with holding onto a memento from his encounter with the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
“At the end of the day, he’s another man like me,” Clemons explained to Rhim. “He’s LeBron, but at the end of the day, I threw that cup in the trash. And it’s nothing up with him; I just got a fresh drink.”
When all was said and done on Monday, James, Clemons and the rest of the Philly faithful went home happy after a 126-107 Sixers win over the Chicago Bulls.
James ended with 15 points, seven rebounds and nine assists on 6-for-13 shooting in the win, as his new-look 76ers improved to 7-1 on the season.
